Our Roots
In 1973, Second Presbytery's Committee on Church Extension designated Greenville as a prime area for establishment of a new Associate Reformed Presbyterian church. Land was purchased at the intersection of Devenger Road and Boiling Springs Road, and a nucleus was recruited from the Greenville ARP Church who would be willing to start a new church.
In March, 1974, Second Presbytery granted the request of 31 people to be organized into a mission church. The group named this new work the Grier Memorial Mission in honor of the former pastor of the Greenville ARP Church, Dr. R.C. Grier, Sr. James Corbitt was appointed mission developer, and the mission started with 32 members. Permission was given by Presbytery in October 1975 for Grier Memorial to become an organized congregation.
Grier Memorial ARP Church was later renamed Devenger Road ARP Church and has a proud heritage and a bright future. We realize ultimately the significance of a church is what happens inside its fellowship with God and with one another. As we look back over the years, it is evident that the hand of God has been at work at Devenger Road. We pray for his guidance and direction as to strive to know Him and to do His will. |
